Bhubaneswar : On the occasion of the 12th National Handloom Day, a grand fashion show celebrating the rich textile heritage, exceptional craftsmanship of weavers, and modern appeal of Odisha’s handlooms was organized by Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts department of government of odisha in Bhubaneswar on 7th August 2026. Organized to promote the state’s handloom clusters and connect traditional weaving with contemporary fashion styles, this special ramp show featured a total of 4 sequences presented by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bhubaneswar, and Liva (Aditya Birla Group).
In the first two sequences presented by NIFT Bhubaneswar, garments crafted using GI-tagged handloom textiles took center stage; the first sequence featured 10 modern garments made from historic Dhalapathar curtains and fabrics, while the second sequence presented 10 attractive garments highlighting Tussar fabric. This was followed by two sequences presented by Aditya Birla Group’s Liva, which showcased a seamless blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern fashion aesthetics. Among these, the third sequence featured 12 exquisite sarees from the famous Nuapatna handloom cluster, and the fourth sequence showcased 12 modern garments (6 men’s and 6 women’s wear) reflecting the intricate artistry of Bargarh Double Ikat.
This Fashion show has objectives of sustainability, Value chain development and global market access.
It has helped to establish sustainable fashion models that honor traditional techniques while minimizing environmental impact.
It has supported to elevate handloom home and office textiles by connecting weavers, designers, and supply chain partners into a cohesive value chain. It aims to enhance Global Market Access by driving design-led product development to expand handloom exports in global home and workplace design markets.
It is also glad to announce that the Department of Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts has signed an MOU with LIVA of Aditya Birla group to sustain regenerative fibre clusters especially LYOCELL.
In this warm evening, Commissioner cum Secretary Guha Punam Tapas Kumar, Director textiles and Handlooms Surya Narayan Pattanaik, Additional Secretary Madhusmita Behera, joint secretary Mamata Nayak, special officer Indira Behera , public relation officer and other officials are present and enjoyed the event. Director of NIFT, Bhubaneswar Prof Dr. Vibhabari kumar, Bhavna mall, subhendu barman from Aditya Birla Aditya birla ‘s Liva saree category senior vice president prinyanak priyadarsini are also present in the event.
This state-level event successfully reflected the Government’s continued commitment to honoring the weaving community, developing regional artisan clusters, and establishing Odisha’s handlooms on the global fashion stage.
