Berhampur : In a world often driven by wealth, fame, and personal comfort, the life of Dr. K. Lakshmibai stands as a powerful reminder that true greatness lies in selfless service. At the age of 97, she has pledged her entire lifetime savings of Rs 3.40 crore to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, dedicated exclusively to the treatment of underprivileged women suffering from cancer and to the early detection of the deadly disease. In a single, extraordinary act, decades of sacrifice and hard work have been transformed into a lifeline for thousands who cannot afford medical care.
The Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, Pravati Parida, who visited Dr. Lakshmibai’s residence, described her as “no longer merely a human being; she is a living legend.”
Indeed, Dr. Lakshmibai’s life is a blueprint of courage, compassion, and unwavering service. Born in 1926, long before India attained Independence, she defied societal norms to pursue higher education in the United States—a journey almost unimaginable for Indian women of her era. Yet, instead of choosing a life of comfort abroad, she returned home to dedicate herself to women’s education and healthcare in Odisha’s most underserved regions.
Her decision to place humanity above wealth, service above security, and compassion above comfort is a lesson not only for the State, but for the entire nation. Her generosity transcends philanthropy; it serves as a moral compass, reminding India that the most enduring legacy is measured not in rupees, but in lives transformed, the Deputy Chief Minister said.
“Meeting Dr. Lakshmibai was my long-cherished wish. I sought her blessings today before extending Subhadra Yojana support to the women of Odisha,” she added. Dr. Lakshmibai’s journey remains Odisha’s pride and India’s inspiration, reminding the nation that the highest legacy is built by those who give selflessly and serve without expectation.
